Workshops on faculty-led study abroad programs scheduled

The Office of Education Abroad will hold two informational workshops for University faculty interested in learning how to develop and facilitate short-term study abroad programs. The workshops will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 26, and Monday, April 30, in the College of Health and Human Services, Room 207. 

Workshops to focus on grant-writing basics

Summary: 

The Office of Proposal Development (OPD) will hold a series of three workshops designed to help faculty and staff members develop competitive grant proposals. Lesley Brown, OPD director, will present the workshops for faculty or staff members new to grant writing. Identical sessions of each workshop will be presented.

“Getting Started: Developing Your Project Idea and Understanding Sponsors” begins the series. Participants will be introduced to offices on campus that provide support for writing and processing grant proposals. There will be discussions on developing “fundable” ideas, understanding the expectations of external sponsors and matching ideas to sponsors’ needs. Employees can attend a session at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), Room 145, or 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, in CHHS, Room 380.

OUTSpoken Involvement: Filmmaker, author to teach activism

Summary: 

In October, UNC Charlotte students have the opportunity to learn about activism first-hand from Jennifer Baumgardner, an award-winning filmmaker and writer who will inaugurate the University’s “Activist-in-Residence” Program.  

As part of a new initiative co-hosted by the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and the Multicultural Resource Center, Baumgardner will present a series of free, public OUTSpoken talks on bisexual politics and feminist activism.

The signature event for the week will be Baumgardner’s keynote address for the OUTSpoken Lecture Series. She will present “Look Both Ways: Bisexual Politics” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

The Office of Education Abroad will hold informational workshops for UNC Charlotte faculty members who are interested in learning how to develop short-term study abroad programs.

Consistent with national trends, UNC Charlotte has seen significant growth in recent years in the number of students participating in faculty-led, short-term programs abroad, which are credit-bearing opportunities that often range from 10 days to eight weeks, said Kimberly Kuhn, short-term programs coordinator in the Office of Education Abroad.
