Campus community encouraged to take sustainability pledge

As part of the University’s on-going campus sustainability efforts, a pledge has been developed to increase awareness as to how faculty, staff and students can help to “green” UNC Charlotte.

“The aim of the pledge is to highlight best practices in the field of sustainability and to encourage members of the campus community to take some action,” said David Jones, the University’s sustainability coordinator in the facilities management’s Real Estate and Land Use Department.

The online pledge urges participants to engage in conservation efforts on several fronts, including energy, water, transportation and waste.

Jones noted the pledge is similar to ones developed at other colleges and universities. UNC Charlotte has a long-standing commitment to environmental protection; in 2009, the chancellor signed the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), which designates UNC Charlotte as one of more than 650 higher education institutions across the nation whose members agree to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate research and educational efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate.
