The College of Education’s Claudia Flowers has been called a professor who sets the standard for mentoring graduate students. For this distinction, she is the 2012 recipient of the Harshini V. de Silva Award.

During the award presentation Tuesday, Feb. 21, UNC Charlotte Provost Joan Lorden noted that mentors learn by trial and error, and they exercise creativity with each student encounter. She said Flowers has mastered the art of mentoring. “She is recognized by her colleagues for her approach to the student-mentor relationship, and she is lauded by her students – both present and former – for offering an unparalleled level of support and guidance.”

The Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award committee is soliciting nominations for the 2012 honor. The award was established in memory of de Silva, an associate professor of biology, who was noted for her deep dedication to the academic and professional development of graduate students.

The Graduate School is seeking nominations for two prestigious graduate awards – the Harshini de Silva Graduate Mentor Award and the First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal.

The de Silva Graduate Mentor Award is presented to a full-time member of the UNC Charlotte graduate faculty, who evokes outstanding graduate mentoring. The recipient will be honored at a ceremony held on campus in the early spring with an award of a crystal obelisk, a framed citation and a cash prize. The First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal recognizes outstanding scholarship, creativity and/or research among senior, full-time faculty members at UNC Charlotte.
